Healthy Has Become The New Luxury
Healthy Has Become the New Luxury
Something rather strange has happened.
Being healthy has become sexy.
There was a time when luxury meant a fabulous handbag, a great pair of shoes, a first-class ticket and a reservation somewhere impossible to get into.
Actually, who am I kidding?
Those things are still fabulous.
I’m not giving up the handbag.
But somewhere along the way, a good night’s sleep, a healthy gut and waking up with enough energy to actually enjoy your life have climbed rather high up the luxury list.
And I’m here for it.
Since when did we all become so interested in our insides?
Ten years ago, nobody wanted to hear about your gut at dinner.
Now you can barely get through the appetizer before somebody starts talking about their microbiome.
We’re comparing protein intake, sleep scores, supplements, hormones and whether we’ve done our 10,000 steps.
We know what inflammation is.
We know what cortisol is.
Half of us have probably got some sort of wearable telling us we slept terribly, just in case we hadn’t already noticed.
And bizarrely, I quite like it.
Because underneath all the trends and gadgets, something rather good is happening.
We’re becoming interested in feeling well, not just looking well.
Beauty is getting healthier too
I’ve spent more than 30 years doing hair, and believe me, I am never going to tell anyone that a fabulous haircut isn’t important.
It is.
So is great color.
So is a bloody good blow-dry.
There are days when a great blow-dry is practically medical care.
But I’ve also spent decades standing behind people in a mirror, listening to what they’re noticing about themselves.
“My hair isn’t as thick as it used to be.”
“Why am I shedding so much?”
“My hair just feels different.”
And we’re finally becoming curious about the person underneath the hair.
What are we eating?
Are we sleeping?
Are we stressed?
What’s happening with our hormones?
What about our gut?
What’s happening on our scalp?
In other words, we’ve stopped pretending that our head is a completely separate country from the rest of our body.
About time.
Healthy doesn’t have to mean boring
And perhaps fashion tells you everything you need to know about how much things have changed.
The ’90s are back.
The slip dresses, the jeans, the minimal makeup, the hair — apparently we’re doing the whole thing again.
But thankfully, the comeback isn’t about looking heroin chic this time.
We don’t need to look exhausted, painfully thin and as though we’ve been surviving on coffee and cigarettes for three days to be considered cool.
This time around, looking healthy is cool.
And I think that’s a pretty fabulous upgrade.
Being healthy doesn’t mean you have to become the person who brings your own chia seeds to dinner.
You can care about your gut and still drink the martini.
You can lift weights and still order dessert.
You can take your supplements and still have the handbag.
You can want healthy hair and still bleach the living daylights out of it.
I should probably object to that last one professionally, but you get my point.
Health doesn’t have to be about deprivation.
For me, it’s about having more of yourself available to enjoy your life.
More energy. More strength. More confidence.
And yes, hopefully more hair.
Which brings me to Burgeon
This is really where my thinking behind Burgeon came from.
After spending my career working on the hair from the outside, I became fascinated by what was happening underneath it.
Because your hair follicle isn’t sitting there thinking about your next blow-dry.
It’s part of you.
And once I started looking at hair that way, I couldn’t unsee it.
That’s why Burgeon approaches hair from both directions — inside and out.
Not because I think we should all become obsessed with being perfectly healthy.
God, how exhausting.
But because if we’re going to spend all this time and money making our hair look fabulous, perhaps supporting the place it actually comes from isn’t such a ridiculous idea.
So yes, I’ll take the luxury
Give me the beautiful hotel.
Give me the shoes.
Give me the dinner.
Give me the great hair.
But also give me the sleep, the energy, the strength and the health to enjoy all of it.
Because somewhere between the green juice and the glass of champagne, I think we may finally have figured something out.
Healthy has become a luxury.
And unlike the handbag, this is one I actually want in every color.
